Cassandra took Grell's hand. When she blinked, Cassandra found herself into the Shinigami realm as Grell instantly teleported them both. The sun was shining in the sky with a few clouds. The floor beneath them were tiles. There were many large skyscraper office-like buildings going on from miles.
"Wow." Cassandra stood in awe. Grell continued walking heading to one of the buildings.
"Come on, don't stand there dawdling." She told Cassandra, snapping Cassandra out of her trance. Cassandra quickly followed Grell as she took them inside the building. As they passed down the hallways, Cassandra noticed several posters of vision tests spread out everywhere along the walls.
"So, what's the point of these?" She pointed out.
"There just there to help us if a reaper needs to get their spectacles adjusted."
"Ah, so it's like a joke then." Cassandra smiled. As they made it to the lobby, Cassandra saw many reapers lounging around on their breaks and some standing in line to claim their reaper scythes. Then Cassandra noticed a young man with short blond hair with a dark underside, talking to a female receptionist. Mostly flirting with her. He turned around and noticed Grell and Cassandra and smiled and started walking over to them.
"Hey, sempai Sutcliffe! How's your first day of freedom going?" Grell tensed up as Ronald got closer, pushing Cassandra behind her, trying to hide her. Cassandra blinked in confusion and peered over Grell's arm to get a better look at the man. He smiled tilting his head, leaning over, staring back at her.
"Who's this little cutie you've got with you?"
"I'm Cass-" Grell interrupted.
"She's just a trainee. Don't pay any attention to her." She quickly told Ronald. Cassandra frowned but stayed quiet and Grell continued. "I'd love to stay and chat a little longer, but I'm in a bit of a hurry. Do you happen to know where William is at? I really need to speak to him!" As if summoned, William was already approaching the group.
"Slacking off on your duties, Grell?"
"No, I'm just taking a brief break for the moment. But I really need to talk to you. I might have a solution to our shortage problem."
"Really? How very unlike you." Will narrowed his eyes, staring at Grell. Grell smiled sheepishly. "If this is another attempt to go see that demon-"
"Actually, I have a volunteer."
"Sempai has a girlfriend!" Ronald teased. "And she's not too bad looking if I do say so myself." Grell shot him a glare.
"Knox, if you don't shut your mouth, I will kindly do it for you." Grell threatened.
"And who would that be?" Will questioned.
"She's right-" Grell smiled only for the three of them to find that Cassandra was no longer there.
"I'm waiting." Will said, sternly, slowly losing his patience. Grell began to panic.
"Hey, isn't that her over there?" Ronald pointed out and they saw Cassandra talking to another man, who was sitting on the couch by himself. The young man had short brown hair, wearing the same reaper uniform, and bolo tie. There was another man sitting down beside him, who had wavy blond hair combed on one side while the other had cornrows. He had blue tinted glasses, loosened tie and over coat, a gold chain around his neck.
"So, you're actually a reaper, Alan?" Cassandra asked him as Grell, Will and Ronald made their way over to them. Grell's fist began to clench tighter with each step as they got closer.
"Yeah. Although it is strange for another reaper to say that."
"Who are you anyways?" Eric asked her.
"I'm a new trainee!" Cassandra smiled. She was met with a hard whap to the head by Grell. Cassandra looked at her angrily, rubbing her head.
"Why did you that!?" She whined.
"What did I just tell you earlier!?" Grell hissed, whispering to Cassandra.
"I'm sorry! I couldn't help myself!" Cassandra quickly told her. "Alan was just sitting all alone by himself. I thought he needed some company until Eric came over to join us. And one thing led to another, we were talking."
"So, it's you." Will tiltled his glasses looking at Cassandra. Cassandra nodded.
"Yeah, Grell here told me about your little "shortage of help" problem, so I'm here."
"The reaping field is no place for a woman. Most of our female reapers help sort out paperwork, relay messages, or reaper's death scythe when they come to claim them."
"Then what about Grell? She gets to." Cassandra pointed over to her. Grell stared at her, silently a little surprised. Again, Cassandra still referred to her as a woman when everyone else treated her as a joke. Grell blushed a little and Ronald noticed. Ronald continued to watch, interested to see where this was going as he watched Cassandra and Will.
"Come on. I want to help, and you guys need it! Only an idiot would refuse to do so." Cassandra replied. "I won't cause any trouble and I'm a quick learner!"
Will sighed. "Very well. I'll hand you some books to read up on then you'll need to take the written exam in order to do so." He pulled out a small book from his coat and handed it to Cassandra. Cassandra noticed the title. "Reapers Guide to Reaping." How cute. Does he always carry it around with him?
"You can start with this one in the meantime. And you'll also need a uniform in order to stay with the dress code." Cassandra took it from him, reading it. She sat down on the couch near Alan and Eric, who were talking amongst themselves until they moved a little closer watching Cassandra as she read. They often helped her if she had a question. Will came back carrying some books and Cassandra's uniform and set them down beside her.
"Thank you, Will." She smiled. Will didn't respond and walked away. Cassanra blinked but went back to reading.
"Wow, sempai, where'd you reap this one at?" Ronald asked Grell, turning to her, smiling. Grell tensed up but shrugged it off.
"Oh, I don't know. Someone else beat me to it."
"Then you don't mind if I take her off your hands then. I don't mind training her." Ronald smiled.
"That won't be necessary-" Before Grell could finish, Cassandra slammed the book shut.
"Done!" She smiled. All four reapers blinked at her, stunned.
"What do you mean you're done? You couldn't have possibly read all that in just minutes." Ronald smiled, laughing a little.
"But I am done. I'm ready to take the test." Cassandra smiled.
Word got around fast at headquarters about the new reaper prodigy who passed the written exam for their first time, which most don't. She managed to pass her other two tests as well. Then next week, Cassandra found herself nervously standing in front of the proctor who was sitting at a desk with his assistant. Cassandra then glanced over beside her to see a young man with short black hair, who refused to even acknowledge her. He was jealous. But she didn't really care. It was always like this with him. Cassandra rolled her eyes. He was another trainee like her, waiting for his results.
"Cassandra Gravesfield-" the proctor stopped for a moment looking at her. "Your name is Gravesfield? You don't happen to be related to Jonathan Gravesfield, are you?"
"No. It's just a coincidence." Cassandra smiled. He stared at her for a moment before continuing. "You have a B average in Practical Exam, A average in Written Exam and B average in Ethics. Thus, giving you an A average." He finished before looking over to the other reaper.
"Garret Hayes, you have straight B's in Practical Exam, Written Exam, and a C in Ethics, giving you a B average."
"So does this mean we passed!?" Cassandra smiled.
"Yes. But you're not a full reaper until you do your first reaping test." the proctor explained.
"I don't get why I have to be partners with her!?" Garret shouted.
"Well, usually those who do poorly in their exams are partnered up with those who do the strongest."
"Listen, I know you don't like me, and I don't really care to be honest. You can hate me forever if you want. But this is just a one-time thing then we can go our separate ways. Can't you just swallow your pride for once?" Cassandra told him. Garret scoffed.
"You're not the boss of me. So don't order me around."
"I'm not-I'm just asking to work together just this one time." Cassandra told him. Garret walked away and Cassandra watched as he left.
"Just don't get in my way."
Cassandra stood where she was in disbelief but eventually shook it off. She was not going to let him ruin this. She passed the test! She was finally going to be a reaper! Cassandra quickly left the room to find the others by the lobby.
"So how did it go?" Ronald asked her, smiling.
"I passed!" Cassandra smiled.
"That's great!" Ronald smiled. "Let's go partying to celebrate!"
"But I haven't passed the reaper part yet or gotten my new glasses." Cassandra pointed out. "And it's my partner who I'm a little worried about. We need to work together but he refuses to."
"Reminds me of our first time, doesn't Will!" Grell smiled, doing a little dancing beside him. Will sighed, ignoring Grell.
"I wish I could forget."
"Don't be shy. The memory is forever etched upon my body. I tremble at the thought of it!" Grell moaned, hugging herself.
"What exactly happened?" Cassandra asked, Will, wondering.
"You don't want to know. And you should be off or you're going to be late." Will told her. Cassandra smiled and left, waving.
"Wish me luck!"
